The Hickory Soup Kitchen serves hot lunches every weekday to Hickory's hungry and homeless. Their new building feadtures private shower stalls similar to those found at your local gym. Guests are free to check out books or magazines from the library.

Founded in 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Catawba Valley is an ecumenical, Christian-based organization dedicated to the premise that eveyone should have a safe and affordable place to live. Through engaging families as partners, Habitat seeks to build not only hoes with families, but strength, self-reliance, and stability as well. We know that strong, stable homes help build strong and stable communities. We believe that with a little help, we all have the potential to stand alone. In addition to home construction, Habitat for Humanity of Catawba Valley recently launched Habitat Repairs" This program address the home repair needs of eligible low income Catawba Valley homeowners.

GHCCM provides/coordinates services for adults and families facing crisis and living in poverty. They are a faith-based,volunteer driven organization. They strive to provide Hope, Help and Healing to those in most need through Service, Advocacy and Community Support. They work with clients to identify the factors keeping them in poverty and set a plan in place to help clients find greater independence, self-reliency and personal healing through community connections. Crisis Help Center- The Emergency Assistance program with mortgages, rent, utilities, emergency food and donations of clothing and furniture through our offices in Hickory, Morganton, Granite Falls, Taylorsville, Marion, Boone and West Jefferson. Shelter Of Hope- a safe and secure place for homeless men, women and children to stay while their basic human needs are met. Residents receive two meals a day and are provided with clean linens and all necessary personal hygiene products. Guidance and direction are given to each client toward transitional and permanent housing opportunities. Also provided: Family Stores- Boys and Girls Club- Disaster Relief.

CCSS has several public assistance programs under the Economic Services section designed to help families and individuals. Medicaid provides a full range of medical, dental and psychological services. Eligibility is based on household composition and citizenship. Food Assistance supplements a household's ability to purchase food. Eligibility is based on household income, assets and citizenship. Day Care Scholarships provides assistance to families who need day care to work or attend school. Eligibility for day care is based on need and family income. Work First provides short term cash assistance to families with minor children in the home. Work First is an employment program with a strong emphasis on helping families become economically self-sufficient quickly.

Highways and Hedges in an all-volunteer local minisitry of mercy providing services to Homeless and Needy people in Catawba and surrounding counties. They operate with donations of In-Kind items and monetary donations. First and third Mondays they provide hot meals, toiletries and groceries to each family. Second and fourth Mondays they open their clothes closet for anyone in need, free of charge. Annual Bible schools and book bags with schools supplies are provided. Thanksgiving Meals are provided and families are sponsored for Christmas gifts. As funds are available assistance is given for rent utilities, medical bills, medicine tents, heaters, firewood, etc.

ECCCM is a crisis assistance ministry serving all of Catawba County EXCEPT Hickory zip codes- 28601- 28602. with agency programs. ECCCM provides financial assistance for mortgage and rent payments, assistance with utility bills, fuel oil and life necessary pharmaceuticals. In addition ECCCM provides emergency food, clothing and basic car repairs They assist with LIEAP, CIP GA on behalf of DSS. They assist with FEMA, Christmas Bureau, and Crisis Assistance Coaching programs. They also provide a Thrift Store at 245 East N. Street Newton.

The Corner Table is a soup kitchen outreach ministry. Their primary purpose is to provide nutritious meals in a comfortable environment for any men, women or children who are in need. They serve a hot lunch meal, Mon-Fri and send each guest home with a bag lunch on Friday to cover another meal. Bag lunches are provided on Saturdays throughout the month. They stock their porch daily with breads,They also help with health fairs, blood pressure checks, flu shots, library, HIV testing, disability help, haircuts, staffing agencies and health and financial seminars.

Safe Harbor provides services to women and children experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. They pick every every morning (Mon-Fri) at 9 am fro the Salvation Army and return the ladies at 3pm. While there, they provide lunch, transportation ,assist with basic needs such as ID, food stamps, phone applications, social security cards, filling out housing applications, job applications assistance with scheduling appointments and an array of classes.
