Board of Education

About the Board

OVERVIEW

The Newton-Conover City School System is governed by a six-member Board of Education that sets policy and establishes guidelines for school operations.  Board members are elected nonpartisan, citywide, with three representatives coming from the City of Newton and three from the City of Conover.  The Board elects the chairman and vice-chairman.

At Newton-Conover, the board members' decisions affected approximately 3,000 students in eight schools during the school year.  Decisions made by local boards of education affect communities, families, and children.  Today's children in public school classrooms will be tomorrow's leaders.  Local Boards of Education literally have the future in their Collective hands.

Board members are committed to setting the highest possible standards for the school system and our students.  They spend many hours reviewing policies, establishing goals, studying issues, attending meetings, and determining budgets.  There are four key roles for a board member:  setting a vision for education in the local community; establishing a structure for everyday operations; developing a comprehensive accountability system for administrators, teachers, and students; and advocating for students and public schools.

The superintendent, appointed by the Board, is responsible for the school system's administration.

Regular monthly board meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in the Newton-Conover Board Room.  Work sessions are conducted on the first Monday of each month at 4:30 p.m. at the Administrative Offices.  All meetings are announced in advance through the local media, and the public is invited to attend. Persons desiring to address the Board should follow the procedures set forth below.
